The Hollard Insurance Company was initially established in Johannesburg in 1980 by the Enthoven family and has since grown to become an internationally recognised insurance business providing support to millions of customers throughout Africa, Europe, India, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
Founded by Robert Enthoven, the inspiration for the Hollard name originally came from Hollard Street in Johannesburg, where the South African Stock Exchange is located, and is symbolic of Hollard’s long-standing purpose of enabling people to create and secure a better future.
Almost 20 years after Hollard was formed, Robert’s son Patrick sensed an opportunity to bring that same purpose to the insurance market in Australia. So, in 1999, led by Patrick’s son Richard, the Hollard Australia business was established as an agent of Lumley Life.
Launching in Australia
Since launching in Australia, Hollard has continued to grow and cement strong partnerships with iconic Australian brands to become the 5th largest general insurer in Australia.
At this important point in our history and with more than 1,600 employees in Australia, we’re proud of where we’ve come from and how we’re continuing to make a difference.
Across the last two decades we have built our reputation as an insurance partner of choice across Hollard Insurance Company for personal insurance and Hollard Commercial Insurance for business insurance.
In October 2022, we reached another significant milestone in our journey as we welcomed Hollard Insurance Partners Limited (formerly Commonwealth Insurance Limited) into the Group.
